Origin of Dendrobium Genus<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The genus occurs in diverse habitats throughout much of south, east and southeast Asia<\/a>, including China<\/a>, Japan<\/a>, India<\/a>, the Philippines<\/a>, Indonesia<\/a>, Australia<\/a>, New Guinea<\/a>, Vietnam<\/a>, and many of the islands of the Pacific<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1981, Briegar reclassified all terete<\/a>-leaved Dendrobiums<\/em> from Australia<\/a> and New Guinea<\/a> into a new genus, Dockrillia<\/a><\/em>. The Winika<\/a> orchid from New Zealand<\/a> was formerly D. cunninghamii<\/em>, but has now been moved into a monotypic<\/a> genus Winika<\/a><\/em>. In 1989, Clements upgraded the D. speciosum<\/em> complex<\/a> into individual species;[2]<\/a><\/sup> similarly, the D. bigibbum<\/em>complex (which contains the well-known Cooktown Orchid<\/a> of Australia, D. phalaenopsis<\/em>) has recently been split up. However, as an illustration of the current revisions in the taxonomy of Orchidaceae<\/a> these \u2018splits\u2019 have now been reversed and the currently accepted species, natural nothospecies<\/a> are presented on Wikispecies Dendrobium<\/em><\/a>.
