A few grow into long reedlike stems. Leaf bases form sheaths that completely envelope the stem. In the section\u00a0<i>Formosae<\/i>\u00a0(e.g.\u00a0<i><a title=\"Dendrobium infundibulum\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dendrobium_infundibulum\">Dendrobium infundibulum<\/a><\/i>), the sheaths and undersides of leaves are covered with fine short black hairs.
