I hammer away at the keyboard for my own work assignment and listen to her speaking to automated voice messages and people who remain silent throughout the entire duration of her pitch and then abruptly hang up. It’s discouraging, and it’s disorientating. At certain moments we make eye contact and without even saying it we know what the other is thinking : “Why are we doing what we do?”

One thing that these moments have made me notice is that – I am sure as heck not used to setbacks, but the people around me in my organization seem to thrive under them. You can’t have the victory without the struggle right? The week has gone by too fast for me to absorb anything, and this makes me realize that I have become acclimatised to the place I am in and the tasks I perform. Work is second nature, opening the files and emails first thing in the morning has become second nature, citing articles APA style and ensuring that all the resources to be included in the toolkit are legitimate has become second nature, and because of that I don’t think twice about what happens around me.

So instead, I will list the two things that have stood out to me over the week.

The pigeon that stood on one leg in the middle of the park which I sat in during lunch break, and then proceeded to make direct eye contact with me for a full three minutes until I got uncomfortable and had to look away.

The little four-year old girl (a coworker’s daughter), who came into the office today and sat next to me scribbling with colorful markers, and was a willing participant of the interaction techniques that I tried out with her, techniques that Ayat and I are looking to include in the toolkit in order for parents and educators to better facilitate their children’s art experiences. She was also a reminder that the kids Ayat and I are creating this toolkit for are very very real, and very very precious indeed.

I would have included a photo of BOTH pigeon and child, but unfortunately you’re just going to have to imagine them instead.

Ayat, my fellow cohort and also my co-worker, has begun making calls to reach out to other organizations asking for their interest in partnering with us on our project.
