Post the inauguration of the 45th president (or as I not-so-endearingly refer to him as “he who shall not be named”), I feel that both I and many of my peers have been dealing with an additional amount of stress. \u00a0Besides the stress that comes with being a college student such as studying for exams and budgeting if you can really afford to go to Chipotle this week (you know the things we are supposed to worry about), we are affected with the stress that comes with each new executive order or House vote that comes from government. \u00a0From healthcare to net neutrality to immigration and everything in between, at least once a week I find myself begrudgingly sharing an article to my friends showing what the government has done now. \u00a0You are often plagued with so much news that you sometimes feel like you can’t forget anything, and that’s sadly what I ended up doing.<\/p>\n
The very controversial (and I’ll just say it, bigoted as hell) Muslim ban got put in place again after months of conflict from the courts. \u00a0It is “supposedly” less rigid than the first two put in place, as this ban\u00a0states that people from these countries can still enter if they “…prove a relationship with a parent, spouse, child, adult son or daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law or sibling already in the United States to be eligible.” \u00a0As well, students, journalists, and employees would also be exempt. \u00a0However it ignores the fact that it is, first and foremost, a ban<\/em>. \u00a0A ban on an entire group of people that only comes from the demonization of\u00a0the religion that they practice.<\/p>\n Now you may be wondering, Alyson how is this a community issue? Isn’t this more national news?<\/em><\/p>\n You are correct, and so am I. \u00a0This news will affect everyone regardless of your zip code or state, but it will also affect us personally because we\u00a0are working in a city full of immigrants. \u00a0Whether they came through Ellis Island or Detroit Metropolitan, the metro Detroit area is composed of so many\u00a0ethnic groups and we have coexisted together for decades if not centuries, and this ban goes against everything I have learned as a Detroiter, and everything we have learned as DCBRP members, which is to listen, to learn, and to act not with fear and bigotry, but with curiosity and compassion.<\/p>\n
