This weekend, Erin took to where he grew up in Detroit. I saw the street that he grew up on. I saw the houses that his friends used to live in; after they had moved out, the houses have collapsed from neglect. It was interesting to explore a place from with someone who has experienced that place his whole life. He pointed out a lot of stores and parks that evocated a sense of nostalgia. He told me stories of how he and his friends got in fights and hung out. But he also pointed out the new things. As we entered his town, we saw a huge field of solar panels that are brand new. The juxtaposition between the new solar technology and the decrepit streets and buildings next door is gripping. When I asked Erin what he thought about it, he said that is a form of local progress that he can get behind. A lot of this internship has been focuses on how to become allies with a city not a savior, and I am glad I was able to see an example of effective additions to community. This was enforced from our tour of Brilliant Detroit and the gym-laundromat. These two things are so different, but different communities want different things, and that is an important lesson.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
