The last few days of the program are finally here! After reading through the letter to myself written nine weeks ago, I am definitely both relieved and proud that I’ve accomplished all that I’ve set out to. After hours upon hours of planning every detail imaginable that goes into a huge event, I can definitely say with confidence that I have learned how to plan a health fair. Based on the survey evaluations we passed out, vendors, attendees, volunteers, and planning committee members all seemed to agree that the event was a success. I am beyond relieved that we were able to continue providing Parkside residents and other community members with important health-related resources.<\/p>\n
This summer, I was also hoping to further develop myself professionally as well. I was able to attend a lot of conferences, conference calls, and meetings related to research and other topics that interested in me. Experiencing these things definitely solidified my desire to continue pursuing public health-related research as a career. I’ve also learned how to better communicate with people (and that sometimes it’s necessary to send several emails and make several phone calls). Communication has always been one of my weaknesses, and I’m glad I was able to strengthen that area.<\/p>\n
I am so grateful that this internship was so community-based. I think I’ve learned a lot about what it takes to work in a community and all of the value that community-based research brings. Some of my favorite memories from this program have been speaking with residents and spending time with the Parkside and Chandler Park kids at horse camp.<\/p>\n
