I have really enjoyed my time at the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation this far and I know I’ll love it there over the next 8(.5) weeks. Working at DHDC over this past week has also been quite hectic for me. Everyone is involved in a wide range of projects, and I have been working in everything that co-workers in my department do.

The mission of DHDC is to serve the community of Southwest Detroit, primarily through services to families and youth in the area, creating a safe space and opportunities for Southwest residents. I work in the Family Services department; we offer workshops for parents, a tobacco prevention program, a new parent organizing group (the Parent Institute or Instituto de Padres) and a Parent Mentoring Service where parents work in the schools both to earn extra income and as volunteers (some volunteering and some work for pay; this program will first be implemented in the fall).

My research project this summer is not very well defined at this point; there are a lot of directions that I could go: in the Padres Unidos program (parent workshops), I could explore parent retention and participation in further DHDC events, especially the Parent Institute. I had wanted to conduct a survey of parents who chose not to return to the Parents Institute, but based on the recommendation of a coworker with a lot of experience I decided that was a bad idea; culturally, it would not be a good idea to call the women in the group (who I have never met before) and ask why they haven’t returned, and it would be unlikely that they would be open and give meaningful feedback. Also, the people who we really want to stay are self-motivated leaders and the people who don’t return don’t usually fall into that category according to my coworkers (although I am still open to studying this question or a similar one). I think my research may be more focused at this early stage on reviewing other organizations that have similar programs and seeing how we could improve our own through reading organizing training manuals, exploring other successful organizations’ histories and reading academic texts on the matter (taking notes whenever I can). I am confident I will produce some sort of research by the end of my time at DHDC but I really do not know what it will look like.

Reflecting on my first week, it has been many things; exciting, interesting, busy, confusing, a little stressful, and a million other things. Overall, it was amazing; I had a lot of fun both inside and out of work and feel I have been productive up to this point. I am looking forward to what I can achieve and learn over the next few weeks, and hopefully grow as a person!

Signing off,

Chris

Hey everyone!
