Wow I can’t believe its been a whole week since I’ve been here. So far I can definitely say that Detroit is treating me really well. This past week has been a challenge as well as a learning period. A couple of individuals and I have definitely taken advantage of our weekends to explore the city better. Last Sunday we took a nice long walk from the dorm all the way to the River Walk. This was definitely a nice site to see as well as the different scenes we came across on our way there and back. One thing I loved the most was watching the sun set in downtown. This was a nice scene to witness because it was just so beautiful. We also developed a weekly ritual of having a brunch every Sunday to reflect upon our week as well as talk about the challenges we faced and how we hope to overcome those challenges. Through this activity, I hope to get to know each and everyone better as well as form a bond with these individuals.<\/p>\n
I am currently placed at Detroit Public School office of energy and sustainability and as I am a BCN major it is definitely a new experience for me. However I am embracing it to the fullest because I know I will be able to learn a lot from this office by the end of this program. My supervisor Emile Lauzzana is one of the most laid back individuals I have ever had the privilege of meeting. He understands that majority of what we may come across as far as the program he works on will be new concepts or ideas to both Chelsey and myself. He has therefor taken time each day to explain things to us as best as he can. This is actually helpful in so many aspect for me. The main project that he has both Chelsey and myself helping him with is the Go Green Challenge that a few of his partners and himself implemented into the Detroit school system in order to educate the students about savings in energy and water as well as some gardening programs.<\/p>\n
According to Emile, the idea of this program is to implement a behavior-based initiative in the schools by recruiting faculty members, staffs as well as students in order to help reduce the amount of energy used in an entire school year. The students have definitely taken an interest in the program and are learning a great deal from it, which they intend take the knowledge they gain back home. In my opinion this is a good because it means they students are not only helping the school system save money on energy and water but also they are helping their parents achieve the same results. The Go Green Challenge has different aspects that provides the teachers as well as students from the DPS systems options to take part in what they enjoy the most. This also allows the students to take leadership roles in different projects. As of right now in the office, Chelsey and myself are analyzing a survey that all the DPS that participated in the program took. The main goal of this analyzes is to find any trend frorm this year’s survey and compare it to that of last year’s survey. In doing this we hope to come up with some type of conclusion as to why some projects were favored and had more participation compared to others. At the end of this summer, we hope to come up with ideas base on this survey to improve the different projects distributed to the schools at the beginning of the school year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
