This blog post is about the organization that I’ve started working for this summer, Friends of Parkside. Friends of Parkside is a non-profit community organization that provides services to residents in the Villages of Parkside, a public housing complex on Detroit’s east side. FOP offers assistance to residents in a number of ways, including monthly food distribution, computer access, and after school programs for children. FOP’s mission is “the betterment of the community” and this is something that my supervisor (and FOP’s executive director) Zachary Rowe is fully committed to. In fact, from the short time that I have been working at Friends of Parkside, I can tell that each staff member, in their own way, is dedicated to servicing the residents.<\/p>\n

My main project while working at FOP is the archiving and partial overhaul of the Dear Santa Program. The Dear Santa Program is held by FOP every December and helps provide Christmas gifts for children in the community. The children write “Dear Santa” letters to \u00a0“Santa’s Helpers” and FOP forwards these letter to generous volunteers who choose an item to buy off a child’s list. The opportunity to possibly help children is what excited me most about working at Friends of Parkside. However, so far, I have been kind of stressed out over the archiving aspect of the project. I would really like to interact with the children and their families more, but I am kind of apprehensive about it. Up until today, I felt everything was going wrong (I tend to overreact) until I talked more with my supervisor about my role as an intern and possible opportunities to put my skills to use. I am looking forward to work tomorrow and week three!<\/p>\n

This may have not been my first week in Detroit, but it has been my first experience working and living alone here. I would definitely classify myself as an introvert, and I have not had the opportunity to hang out with my peers as much as I should. However, I have had fun exploring parts of the city I’ve never seen on my own! My favorite part has to be trying new restaurants.
