Whenever I reflect on my time in Detroit I expose a tangled net of observations, impressions, and testimonials which affect my behavior and expectations for the city. This morning I had a talk with Jill, the office manager at iO, about some of my observations and impressions so far. What I revealed in our discussion mirrored some of her feelings about the city. We discussed the article I’m posting in this blog from the New Yorker. She recently sent it to me through email, and it really represents some of the things we both expressed in our conversation early this morning. Rollo Romig\u00a0gives his testimonial of\u00a0the North Rosedale community and how crime essentially was an integral component in inspiring intense community involvement\u00a0and the closeness of its members. In many of our posts we espouse a sense of idealism that this article directly speaks to… and Rollo argues that to live and work in Detroit necessitates it. You can not easily pull all the pieces apart. What’s great about Detroit was\u00a0perhaps\u00a0born out of the many struggles that define its communities.\u00a0There are reasons some of these communities are so close knit, there are reasons many of us have reacted so strongly to criticisms and one-sided positions on Detroit. Our being here requires our hope, an almost religious sense of belief, as the author suggests. Another powerful point in the article mentioned\u00a0that communities which face the kids of challenges as are occurring in Detroit, bring out a different side of people. People lead less\u00a0self devoted lives solely\u00a0centered around comfort. You have to live for something here, because that is how you stay. Many of the people who stay here are ideologically driven to do so. To leave would be to sell out. This article proposes that the\u00a0reasons to stay or leave Detroit are\u00a0not always as simple as many people might think. There are more than two sides. Rather, there is a web of interconnected tangled feelings, experiences, and rationalizations which ultimately lead to decisions. Yet, all to often these decisions don’t always represent the complex feelings;\u00a0the mixed-emotions, that go into making them. I don’t know that I’d make any determined argument about the city thus far. I would only say it’s complicated…but I know I would recommend those who outright bash Detroit to do some research or try living here first.\u00a0Experience does make a difference.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
