An article published this past week in the Detroit News revealed some surprising statistics about maternal health in Detroit. Among the most startling: the maternal death rate for Detroit is three times greater than the nation’s. In addition, Detroit’s maternal death rate of 58.7 per 100,000 babies (according to the Center for Disease Control) is higher than some developing nations. Health experts have attributed increases in the rate to high levels of poverty and chronic health conditions, which are more prevalent in African Americans. These two factors have created a troubling situation for mothers in Detroit.<\/p>\n
This article and other articles I read related to the subject really surprised me. I never would have thought that a city, especially in a nation so advanced as the United States, would have higher maternal deaths rates than those of several developing countries. I think it really speaks to the serious issues that Detroit faces that are unique for such a large city in one of the most developed nations in the world. Another example of this is the recent water shut off crisis.<\/p>\n
This led me to think about the quality of life for residents of the city. People often talk about the revitalization of Detroit but what they speak of is essentially one small section. There is still a long way to go for the people who have always lived and worked in Detroit and will continue to do so for years to come, regardless of the city’s status. When will residents of Detroit see some of the benefits of the change that is supposedly happening in Detroit?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
