I love my placement thus far! Everyone here is super helpful, and great to be around. Metro Matters has an very casual and open environment, which makes for a comfortable workplace. At my organization there are only 5 full time employees, and 3 interns, so there are really great relationships between the staff. We have weekly Monday morning meetings, in which we discuss our tasks for the week, and what we may need help on. My placement is in Ferndale, right outside of Detroit, so we don’t get much interaction with the city during the day. Ferndale feels a lot like being in Ann Arbor on campus, because everything is easy to walk to. In Ferndale, there are a number of restaurants and shops to walk to during lunch, or breaks.<\/p>\n

Since my major is architecture, I have really had time to observe the buildings in Detroit lately more than I have been able to do before. Also, since my project is focused on transit design, it has given me the opportunity to look at Detroit in its totality surrounding architecture and urban planning. The construction down Woodward for the M-1 Rail, is annoying yet exciting. The M-1 Rail will provide great opportunities for Detroit, and the people living here, and surrounding areas. With downtown having some of the most beautiful buildings, I have really enjoyed being immersed in Detroit’s architecture.<\/p>\n

Regional Transit Authority Meeting<\/p>\n

This week I had a meeting downtown at the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) office, with the Regional Transit Authority (RTA). The meeting was on the 14th floor, which was really cool, because of the floor to ceiling windows, overlooking the Detroit River. There were a lot of great influential people there, working to improve transit in Metro Detroit areas.
