Today I got the opportunity to observe an informal conversation between Mayor Mike Duggan and members of the community. Every Friday, the Green Garage hosts a community lunch where members of the community are invited into the space to get to know each other and to hear a presentation from a member of the community who happens to be working on something worth knowing about.

Mayor Duggan talking to members of the Green Garage community

This week, the guest was Mayor Duggan, and the conversation was on the topic of “the spirit of Detroit.” One thing that I’ve observed since moving to the city is the resilient spirit of the Detroit residents and the pride they take in the city, especially long-term Detroit residents.

This was a reoccurring theme in the discussion with the mayor. The people of Detroit are ready for positive change and are not afraid to get their hands dirty in order to make that happen. Another reoccurring theme was how, while change and improvement to Detroit is exciting, we must be careful and mindful of the people who have stuck it out in Detroit, even during the years when no one else wanted to be here.

The spirit of Detroit is strongest in those that have held down the fort during undesirable decades, and it’s up to us, the people who are drawn to the city that’s full of promise and new opportunities, to support the people that have been here all along.

It’s a little cliche to say that the best part of Detroit is the people, but from what I’ve observed during my time here, it’s only become a cliche because it’s so damn true. I’ve observed a lot of pride, a lot of kindness, and a lot of passion toward projects that will help Detroit and it’s community members thrive. The people I’ve met care about each other and are thoughtful of the needs of people beyond their immediate community group. They want their neighborhood fixed up, but they also want neighborhoods across the city to be fixed up (especially neighborhoods beyond downtown/midtown). They’re selfless and committed to one another and it shows.

Detroit is far from perfect and there’s a lot of work to be done, but the people who live here live here for a reason and they’re willing to put in the effort to fulfill this city’s potential.

The last three weeks have left me feeling very sponge-like…here to absorb anything and everything that I come in contact with.
