The Detroit Food Academy is an organization that provides an after school program and six week summer program for high school students in Detroit Schools centered around cooking and entrepreneurship. The goal is to teach students food awareness, food justice, and leadership skills. Along with this food and cooking-centric program is an emphasis on local entrepreneurship and business skills. My job this summer is to look at the sets of surveys that students take before and after the program, and to improve those surveys so that the Detroit Food Academy can better serve the next cohort of students. When the summer program starts, I will also be participating and interacting with the students, in order to collect their experiences via that route. The hope is that Marjai and I will be able to create a short video that showcases the fun of the summer program, and also to bring comments and suggestions to the DFA staff so that they can better tailor the summer program to students\u2019 needs. <\/span><\/p>\n

My first week was spent getting to know the workplace, and the people who I would be working with for the duration of the summer. My supervisor wanted the focus of the initial days to be spent of becoming comfortable with everybody involved in the Academy. It has been a good week, and the work hasn\u2019t been immediately intensive. I really enjoy the atmosphere of the Green Garage, and the folks who work with and around the Detroit Food Academy are all pleasant. I look forward to starting in on the survey material more in depth next week. I\u2019m very interested in helping improve the quality of the DFA\u2019s surveys, as well as the quality of the actual programming through that. My first week in Detroit has been a good time as well. I have great suite mates, good rooming, and plenty of things which occupy my time outside of work. I have had no major setbacks, though I still have a few small details to figure out as far as my daily routine and living habits. I look forward to the rest of the summer. <\/span><\/p>\n
