Lazily huddled in the alley, looking so falsely helpless. Day after day I’ve tried shooing her away yet like a fly she comes back- each time a little weaker. I am a charitable man who helps the unfortunate but laziness is not a misfortune, it is a disease and I am not a doctor. She begs to be one of my barbers or even a cleaner but in no fairness would a business like mine be ambushed by such an ignoble presence. What would the competition think of my barbershop becoming a brothel? Nonsense. Supporting a woman like her would destroy my reputation. I take a deep breath, shut the curtains, and block out any creeping pity. I walk over to the front door and flip the sign to say open.

My back faces the door but I hear a chime indicating that someone has entered. I close my eyes, hoping that I miraculously become invisible. I know her silence. Its desperation haunts me.

I spun around and spoke in an enthusiastically robotic voice, “Welcome, how can I be of assistance today?”

She looked up at me with indignity. “If you just give me one day to prove myself, sir-”

I cut her off. “Ma’am, I told you I am not looking for new employees right now.” I firmly said.

“I used to cut hair at my aunt’s salon- I know what I’m doing just give me a chance to show you- please.” She begged.

“I’m sorry, I really can’t have you- lurking- around here anymore.” I apologized.

Tears filled her eyes. “Give me this opportunity- sir let me try. I couldn’t help but imagine how ashamed he would feel when he got old enough to understand what his mother really did to pay rent. How would she explain to him the industry she had acquainted herself with? But then again, she did this to herself. Her actions have consequences- surely she must have known that.

And then she spoke a million-dollar idea. For once, that woman spoke innovation. She spoke without realizing what she had spoken but I knew. Business would boom.

I deeply exhaled and grabbed an apron off one of the hooks- firmly handing it to her. I was investing in my reputation. I just needed her long enough for word to spread. I needed people to know that the neighborhood barber was helping a homeless woman and her son. My generosity needed exposure and she was practically a volunteer. The barbershop down the block wouldn’t be competition anymore. I am a pitifully useful object and nothing more or less.

I matter enough for the parents wanting to show their children generosity through a few cents or a dollar but what happens when those children grow up? That day, my goal changed. This wasn’t a new beginning. It was simply a break. I didn’t yearn for sustainability anymore. All I needed was enough money to pay my overdue rent. I just wanted to make it long enough for my son to direct his own life. Just long enough for him to walk on his own, for him to feed himself. Just long enough for him to stop relying on his unreliable mother and then he can have a new beginning. He can have my new beginning. The switch I chose to make was not meant to provoke pity but rather a newfound sense of reality. With a past like mine, a steady stream of income is a miracle and miracles flourish off of hope.
