The vendors purchase a paper for a determined price then sell that paper for more and keep the profits. Street papers can be found in major cities all around the world. The International Network of Street Papers, INSP, is a network of over 90 street papers. The purpose of this organization is to bring these street papers from communities around the world together to fight poverty and homelessness.

Some of the benefits of street papers include…

Learning time and money management

Improving social skills

Boosting self-confidence

Finding a community

Building a sense of purpose

Financial ability

Even though all street papers have a common mission, they differ in some ways. Below are three examples of street papers in various countries with general descriptions. Street Roots (distributed in Portland, Oregon), Alberta Street News (distributed in Alberta, Canada), and The Big Issue North (distributed in the North of England, UK). The purpose of this analysis is to compare how street papers are constructed in different countries. Some of the factors that are taken into account are their mission statements, initial launch dates, website structures, and content.

Street Roots (Portland, Oregon) – The United States

“Street Roots advocates for systematic change by drawing from the experience of vendors who experience homelessness and poverty”
Street Roots Website Home | Street Roots

Street Roots Sign: Image 1

Street Roots – General Information

Street Roots was founded in 1999.

Each week about 200 vendors purchase the newspaper for 25 cents each, sell them on the streets for $1, and keep the profits.

More than 800 vendors sell the Street Roots newspaper during the course of a year.

Street Roots offers a mobile journalism program to their vendors. One of the incredibly interesting features of Big Issue Street is their app, Street News.

Street News
Street News is an app developed by the publishers of Big Issue North. This app is available on Apple and Android devices and was released a little over one year ago. The app publishes news content from other street papers from all over the world, including Big Issue North. The app took the name of the first street paper to be published, which was in New York in 1989. This app is free to download and the user can read up to five stories without paying, but to get unlimited access, the user would need to buy a monthly subscription. The overall mission statement of “Street News” is to give people the ability to read content from all of the world, while also learning more about street papers as a whole.

Connections

How are these papers similar? All three street papers, Street Roots, Alberta Street News, and Big Issue North all serve a very similar purpose, which is to provide people struggling in poverty with the opportunity to earn income while also engaging with the community. The concept of a street paper also helps humanize homeless people and change the common narrative and conversations about them. It personalizes the vendors and makes them less invisible. Having this job also teaches them very valuable life skills that can give them the help to get housing or improve their financial situations.

How are they different? These papers differ in many ways. For example, how they interact with their vendors, how they advertise donations, and how much funding the papers have. The street paper that does the best job at directly showcasing their vendors and highlighting their stories on the public websites is Street Roots. They give detailed stories on each committed vendor that they have working for them. This helps to expand how much we, as house people, understand people who are homeless. Furthermore, this increases how much we can relate to the “other” on an empathetic level. With a broadened perspective on this issue, more and more citizens can make better informed decisions on a political level. This can be by voting for candidates that plan to increase the welfare program, improving the eviction process, and opening up more jobs that people without home addresses can have.

Which paper seems the most about the vendors? All of these papers seem to be incredibly focused on making a difference in the homeless community (based on their mission statements). However, Street Roots and Alberta Street News took this to a different level, by directly involving the vendors in sections of their papers with both the Vendor Profiles and the Writer’s Corner. Big Issue North does not have a section of their paper that focuses on the vendors directly. This paper seems to put the most effort into being an accessible news outlet that produces content for the general public. Both of these approaches make a direct impact in the community and overall are a great opportunity for homeless people to take advantage of. However, with Street Roots and Alberta Street News highlighting the vendor’s directly, it is creating a different conversation about homelessness and cancelling some of the circulating narratives in society.

How do the street papers age impact their overall quality? As shown in the graph below, the oldest paper is the Big Issue North. This paper, in terms of website structure and content, seems to be the most developed out of the three. Their content is broad, they have created an app, and their website is extremely polished. Though, all three papers meet exceptional standards and are working towards a better community.

Street Paper

First Issue Released Date

Street Roots (US)

1999

Alberta Street News (Canada)

2003

Big Issue North (UK)

1992

Table created by Emma Lapp on October 12, 2022.

Conclusions

The homeless populations in Alberta, Canada and Portland, Oregon are in the same range. However, the United Kingdom faces a much bigger issue. In Alberta, Canada, there were around 2,000 people who received housing aid in 2019(1). In the United Kingdom, there were around 224,000 homeless people in 2021(2). In Portland, Oregon, there were 6,000 recorded homeless people in 2022(3). Since the UK’s homeless population is substantially higher than the other cities, it makes more sense that their website/organization is more developed and heavily funded.

To conclude this analysis, while Street Roots, Alberta Street News, and Big Issue North UK have slight differences in their structure, all three street papers serve a great role in their community. To look at this in an international lens, all three countries chosen are developed, first-world nations. Meaning, the funding abilities and other societal factors are primarily the same. In addition to this, the homeless populations in each of these communities are consistent to that claim. Overall, the concept of a street paper is still new and there is so much more work that needs to be done in order to change the conversation and narratives about the “invisible” people on the streets and make them visible.

Citations

Alberta Street News – Alberta’s only street newspaper., http://www.albertastreetnews.org/.
