Typically, they will purchase the paper from the manufacturer for a small fee, and then sell it for more as a way to make profit. Many states in the United States and many countries have street papers as a way to help the invisible voices in their community find a way to speak to the community. These papers can talk about almost anything, ranging from issues the homeless face to art in the community.

There are hundreds of street papers across the world. Ranging all the way from Britain to Canada to the United States. While all dealing with the topic of homelessness, they all deal with different issues associated with homelessness. The Big Issue North is located in Britain, meanwhile crossing a few country borders, The Alberta Street News is located in Canada, and finally, in the United States, the Homeward Street Journal. The three of these papers all work towards one ultimate goal: to eradicate homelessness and give those dealing with it a better life.

“Poor People Homeless – Free Photo on Pixabay.” Pixabay, https://pixabay.com/photos/poor-people-homeless-beggar-street-2571958/.

Big Issue North, a street paper in England (top), Alberta Street News, a street paper in Canada (middle), and Homeward Street Journal, a street paper in California (bottom)

Big Issue North- England

Moss, Chris, et al. “A Business Solution to a Social Problem.” Big Issue North, 10 Oct. 2022, https://www.bigissuenorth.com/.

Founded by Gordon Roddick and John Bird in September of 1991, Big Issue North has become the “franchise” of street papers. With branches across the world, and various different programs, including a foundation dedicated to helping the homeless, it is no surprise that the paper is the largest growing street paper.

The Big Issue North in Britain is the most aesthetically pleasing street paper I have ever come across. Founded in 1991, The Big Issue has branches in numerous different countries worldwide. The website has different categories into which each article falls into. For example, there is a newly released section and a most read section. (There are a few others but these are the most relevant.) However, despite all of these categories, it doesn’t have some sort of archive in which many issues can be accessed. This is definitely a slight issue, but not one significant enough to downplay the paper, as there are still many other unique aspects to it. For example, the online shop where the magazine sells gifts, merchandise, and subscription plans to the magazine issues. This is a feature unseen on the Alberta Street News and in the Homeward Street Journal.

The Big Issue also is the only paper with a preview to what is in each issue. On the bottom of the website, there is a tab in which readers can preview this week’s magazine before buying it. Each issue costs ￡3.00, however, the subscriptions range based on the number of months purchased, going all the way up to a one year subscription.

The latest issue of Big Issue North is available for purchase on their website or through a street vendor. In this issue, the main feature is a piece on Samuel Bottomley, a young actor, climate change, and more. None of the topics in the magazine really has much to deal with homelessness, but the money made from each magazine goes to the vendors. It can be accessed through their website. “1432.” Big Issue North, 10 Oct. 2022, https://www.bigissuenorth.com/issues/1432-2/.

Alberta Street News

“Main Menu.” Alberta Street News, http://www.albertastreetnews.org/.

The Alberta Street News, founded in 2003 by Linda Dumont, was such a strange cross between professional and very bland. It has social media, but like The Homeward, they are relatively inactive on both their platforms (facebook and twitter). They are unique in the selling aspect. Vendors don’t have set prices they sell the papers for. They buy them for 50 cents each and get paid “for the price of a donation.”

Their archives only go to 2015, compared to The Homewards which go to 2009 and The Big Issues which have no major archival tab. Like the Homeward, Alberta doesn’t have any kind of shop or based website, which is another way to get revenue to help the homeless.

Of the three street papers, Alberta gives the most independence to the homeless individuals they are affiliated with. They allow the homeless individuals to decide on pricing and when they want to work. This paper seems the most geared towards helping the homeless population genuinely get back on their feet as an individual rather than as someone relying on tax funding.

While each of these papers has aspects that make them unique, Alberta has a writer’s corner which gives it a slight edge. This allows vendors and others to submit stories, essays, poems, and more they have written. This helps get their work out to the public and gives those individuals the opportunity to introduce themselves to the world of writing. No other street paper has done anything near this, and I think this is quite possibly one of the most unique things done in a street paper. (These stories published are like serials. Each chapter is published separately.)

The September/ October edition of Alberta Street News is available in the 2022 archives file of the website. The paper is owned by Sacramento Homeless Organizing Committee, or SHOC, which may seem like an advantage at first glance, but upon further investigation puts The Homeward Street Journal at a severe disadvantage. The website is difficult to navigate due to their being so many tabs. It is also hard to gage which tabs are for SHOC and which tabs are for the paper.

Along with that, the journal doesn’t have very much social media presence. This is crucial to modern times as many people connect through social media and other similar platforms. While they are limited in social media presence, they make up for it through their digital archive. With archives dating all the way back to 2008, it is extremely easy to find and read anything the paper has published.

Due to the paper being affiliated with SHOC, they have access to other links the previously mentioned papers did not have access to. For example, there is an entire tab on the website dedicated to health information where homeless individuals can find the nearest vaccination clinics and other issues by the Sacramento Health Department. This gives the homeless community the opportunity to stay healthy despite the conditions.

The September/ October 2022 edition of the Homeward Street Journal accessed through their digital archives. Street papers are a community of hardworking people trying to get back on their feet. They stand with each other despite being their own separate entities. Each one of these papers works towards the same goal: to eradicate homelessness.

The way I see it, a community is a group of people who are working towards one goal or interest and in doing so, they form a bond, that bond being a community. In each of these street papers, there are two communities, the street vendors and the public; however, the two are not as separate as it may seem. The street vendors sell to the public, connecting them and making them a group with a common goal or interest, making them one community.

However, if community needed to be defined in terms of each individual paper, The Alberta Street News would be Edmonton and Calgary, the two cities in Canada where the paper is sold. The Big Issue North has a larger community, as it is the greater part of North Britain. The Homeward Street Journal is rather easy, as it is based in Sacramento, California which is a community in and of itself.

The homeless community at Camp Rhonda, a homeless living quarters in Texas.
Morr, Rebekah. “A Homeless Camp in Deep Ellum Provides Community. The Big Issue North has online articles as well as magazines that are up for sale. The magazines don’t seem to talk about homelessness much. They are just a typical magazine you’d find in the checkout line of a grocery store.

However, the articles available online are a different story. The online articles have much more variety. Some talk about the struggles that vendors face, while others talk about other, more random topics. Even with those articles, The Big Issue still doesn’t really dive into the issues with homelessness. As opposed to The Homeward Street Journal which dives much deeper into the homeless community, their struggles, and references for them.

In the most recent issue of The Homeward Street Journal, one of the articles deals with the cost of living crisis in California. Compared to the two, The Alberta Street News is yet again a middle ground. It deals with topics pertaining to the homeless as well as other articles people may be more interested in reading. It also has poems and other short stories written by the vendors and members of the homeless community. This allows the vendors to not only get the revenue from selling the street papers, but it also gives them the opportunity to get any of their work out there and have it be seen by the public.

Despite being the most “homeless-based” paper of the three, The Homeward Street Journal still doesn’t really go into any gruesome details. It is more geared towards the homeless community but that doesn’t mean it does the best job at relating with the community. The articles are very sugar coated. It is a paper dedicated to helping the homeless find resources rather than bring awareness to the issue that is homelessness.

A poem in the latest issue of The Alberta Street News written by staff writer, Joanne Benger. It talks about homelessness while also giving readers a break from the usual article structure of newspapers.

In terms of content of the papers, The Alberta Street News was the most diverse. It talked about issues that dealt with homelessness while also adding fun touches to make the paper more interesting for the readers. For example, it had an article on a comment Pope Francis made on Indigenous people, the article after that was about the circumstances that bring people to homelessness, and throughout all of that, there were these poems and short stories.

The Homeward Street Journal was the most impactful of the three. There are entire sections dedicated to keeping the homeless informed on their health. The articles also talk more about struggles, for example, there is an article dealing with the Living Crisis and how Politicians ignore them. One issue with the Homeward is it seems very marketed. There are shoutouts to sponsors and to those who donate to the paper. While this isn’t a bad thing to thank sponsors, I felt like every page had some sort of sponsor based ad.

While the website is very aesthetically pleasing, the content itself is rather dull. The only articles I could find that dealt with homelessness were online-only articles. While this helps them reach a bigger audience, the magazine itself seems as though it isn’t really targeted towards eradicating homelessness but rather selling more magazines. Many of the articles in The Alberta Street News don’t inherently talk about homelessness, but the short stories and poems offer a creative look into the perspective on being homeless.

Mission Statements

Each paper has their own mission statement that represents who they are as a newspaper. The Homeward Street Journal believes in educating the public on issues dealing with poverty and homelessness. The Alberta Street News works to provide a voice for those who have been silenced. While the Big Issue North believes in working not begging.

While The Homeward Street Journal and The Alberta Street News have very similar missions, the Big Issue North is quite different. The idea of working not begging seems almost negative, similar to the idea of the bootstrap theory where homeless individuals can work their way up.

Political Cartoon portraying the idea that homeless individuals can lift themselves up.

Homelessness isn’t something that can necessarily be worked away like the Big Issue North is insinuating. The Homeward Street Journal is geared towards educating the public and The Alberta Street News gives the homeless a voice. Both of these mission statements follow the idea of giving the homeless a more public appearance. While they aren’t the exact same, they both stand for a similar idea, the idea of helping those in poverty rather than having them work their way out of poverty. While the two may sound similar side-by-side, they are vastly different. Working out of poverty gives it the connotation that it is something that is chosen, while giving the homeless a voice while simultaneously educating the public solves many issues. (By keeping the public educated, there will more likely be more changes to the homelessness issue, thus helping push government officials to take more serious action(s).)

Resources

Each of these papers goes about a different way to achieve the same goal. While they talk about vastly different topics, their common tie is homelessness and so there are many articles dealing with that issue.

California has the highest homeless population in the United States as of 2018 at 68.9 percent of the population being homeless or unsheltered. So for The Homeward Street Journal to be working with SHOC, the impact had on the homeless community is much greater as they can provide more resources through SHOC. For example, at the end of every one of the issues of the Journal, there are resources that homeless individuals have access to. Whether it be housing, food banks, and even spaces for the homeless youth, The Homeward Journal is the most helpful to the homeless community.

Lists of resources at the end of The Homeward Street Journal that homeless individuals can access for help.

While The Alberta Street News has many resources for the homeless to access as well, it isn’t nearly as many as The Homeward Street Journal and SHOC. They don’t have any resources at the end of their issues like the Street Journal does. They have resources scattered across their website but not nearly as many and not as easy to find.

The Big Issue North didn’t really have a section for resources for the homeless community to utilize. There were sections on becoming a vendor, as with the other two, but nothing that stood out. It has some resources on social media sights, but even those required some digging to find. There wasn’t any easily accessible tab for resources or a page in any of the articles I saw that gave the homeless community assistance.

The Mission Statements of each paper also make a difference on the resources that become available to the homeless. With The Homeward Street Journal focusing on education the public, they will be more inclined to donate and help support those in need. It gives the public more knowledge on the homeless rather than the belief that homeless individuals are lazy and don’t deserve their donations.

The Alberta Street News works towards giving homeless individuals a voice. This will help the community better understand homelessness through the eyes of those who have or do experience it. Through the poems and short stories, readers are being educated about the issues while also feeling engaged and invigorated by an interesting story with a meaningful message.

With the Big Issue North believing in working out of homelessness, it is difficult to grow that same sense of empathy in readers. It will be seen as more of a way for individuals to work their way up rather than gather assistance to live a better life.

Location

Where each newspaper is located makes a big difference on the issues they discuss, when they discuss them, and how they go about doing so. A place like California with a high homeless population needs to focus on dealing with issues associated with homelessness in a more head on manner. As opposed to The Big Issue where homelessness is not as dominant. Canada’s paper once again is the perfect middle ground of the three. While homelessness is surging in Canada, it isn’t as extreme as California and also not as minimal as Northern Britain.

With The Homeward Street Journal being in collaboration with SHOC, it makes it easier to fully grasp what the community needs and what it wants to hear. This makes it easier for them to write articles that keep the public informed while also drawing attention to help and advice for the homeless individuals in the area who may need it.

The Big Issue North may have homelessness but at a lesser rate than California which could in part be the reason they don’t write about homelessness itself. It is marketed more as a magazine dedicated to helping the homeless rather than a magazine targeted to the homeless.

Each of these magazines is dedicated to eradicating homelessness in a different way. Whether it be through social events, articles on the homeless, or other ways. These papers tackle issues in a different way. Whether it be The Big Issue North, The Homeward Street Journal, or The Alberta Street News. These street papers give these homeless individuals the opportunity to be heard and seen.

Works Cited

“1432.” Big Issue North, 10 Oct. 2022, https://www.bigissuenorth.com/issues/1432-2/.

“274,000 People in England Are Homeless, with Thousands More Likely to Lose Their Homes.” Shelter England, https://england.shelter.org.uk/media/press_release/274000_people_in_england_are_homeless_with_thousands_more_likely_to_lose_their_homes.

31, Larry Elderstated on August, et al. “Politifact – Fact-Checking Claims on California’s Unsheltered Homeless Population.” @Politifact, https://www.politifact.com/article/2019/jul/25/are-most-homeless-people-california-unsheltered-an/.

“Changing the Story of Homelessness.” Invisible People, Invisible People, 30 Sept. 2022, https://invisiblepeople.tv/.

“Community Summit 2022.” SHOC, 23 Sept. 2022, https://sacshoc.org/2022/09/23/community-summit-2022/.

“Community, N.” Community, n. : Oxford English Dictionary, https://www.oed.com/view/Entry/37337?redirectedFrom=community.

Guttridge-Hewitt, Martin, et al. “A Business Solution to a Social Problem.” Big Issue North, 10 Oct. 2022, https://www.bigissuenorth.com/.

“Homeward.” SHOC, Sacramento Homeless Organizing Committee , 23 Sept. 2022, https://sacshoc.org/homeward/.

“Main Menu.” Alberta Street News, http://www.albertastreetnews.org/.

Marren, Joseph. “About the Big Issue Foundation.” The Big Issue, 21 Mar. 2022, https://www.bigissue.com/big-issue-foundation/about-us-the-big-issue-foundation/.

Morr, Rebekah. “A Homeless Camp in Deep Ellum Provides Community.
