In just 2018, <strong>UM produced nearly 20,000 tons of waste<\/strong> and purchased about <strong>625,000 plastic bottles<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As active users of plastic and being Wolverines, we need to help Michigan in its aim to reduce waste sent to landfills by 40% by 2025. Moreover, we need to be responsible members of this society: contributing to the same extent that we consume.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is all of our responsibility because limiting plastic pollution does not only benefit us but gives us an opportunity to help ensure the survival of other marine species that have suffered due to our activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(P.S think about this ball of fur being strangled due to us!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-690 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/courses.lsa.umich.edu\/healthy-oceans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2020\/04\/Screen-Shot-2020-04-15-at-4.46.20-PM-300x232.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"387\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/courses.lsa.umich.edu\/healthy-oceans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2020\/04\/Screen-Shot-2020-04-15-at-4.46.20-PM-300x232.png 300w, https:\/\/courses.lsa.umich.edu\/healthy-oceans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2020\/04\/Screen-Shot-2020-04-15-at-4.46.20-PM-1024x793.png 1024w, https:\/\/courses.lsa.umich.edu\/healthy-oceans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2020\/04\/Screen-Shot-2020-04-15-at-4.46.20-PM-768x595.png 768w, https:\/\/courses.lsa.umich.edu\/healthy-oceans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2020\/04\/Screen-Shot-2020-04-15-at-4.46.20-PM.png 1466w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 387px) 100vw, 387px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some of you might be thinking that you live in Ann Arbor and don&#8217;t really depend on the ocean for anything so why should you particularly care about the plastic that ends up in the ocean? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Oceans not only <strong>constitute 90% of the world&#8217;s habitable space<\/strong> but are one of the <strong>most biodiverse ecosystems<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They are a treasure chest of resources that we have continued to rely on but currently, <strong>60% of the world&#8217;s major marine ecosystems are being degraded<\/strong> or used unsustainably (UN). Moreover, 245,000 square kilometers of ocean surface a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rea has been deemed &#8216;dead zones&#8217; where most marine life cannot survive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Think about the cute sea turtles from Nemo or the fascinating fish in aquariums or going scuba diving and seeing a whole new world.
