style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since it is an understudied issue, there is little awareness being brought to the issue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Microplastic pollution poses a huge<strong>\u00a0threat <\/strong>to wildlife AND to humans<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Not enough is being done to stop this pollution<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><span style=\"color: #d40000\">Why We Should Care?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>Threat to Marine Life<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-263 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/courses.lsa.umich.edu\/healthy-oceans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2020\/04\/image1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"298\" height=\"187\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Toxic chemicals (POPs, PCBs, PAHs, and PBDEs) stick to the surface of microplastics at extremely high levels<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many marine organisms (i.e., sharks, fish, turtles, shrimp, seahorses, sea lions) mistake these microplastics for food and eat them or eat an organism that has consumed them, causing these toxins to travel up the food chain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After ingestion, these toxic chemicals leak into the tissues of the marine organisms\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The Ocean Conference 2017<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-265 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/courses.lsa.umich.edu\/healthy-oceans\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2020\/04\/image1-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"302\" height=\"201\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The United Nations stated that approximately<strong> 80%<\/strong> of the debris in our oceans and seas consists of plastic<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marine debris harms approximately 800 species (<strong>40%<\/strong> of which are marine animals and <strong>44%<\/strong> of which are seabird species)<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These species are affected by such debris through ingestion<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each year, plastic debris kills up to <strong>1 million<\/strong> seabirds,<strong> 100,000<\/strong> sea mammals, marine turtles and countless fish<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vox-cdn.com\/uploads\/chorus_asset\/file\/10038499\/OceanPlasticWhale.png\" width=\"65\" height=\"65\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080\"><b>Human Consumption<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Results from Orb Media study:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Microplastics found in honey, sugar, beer, water, bottled water (ex: Aquafina), and the\u00a0 air we breathe.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Microplastics can attract bacteria, which is also ingested by and may kill sea life<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This deceased sea life may end up in U.S. markets and be consumed by humans, allowing the microplastics and bacteria to enter.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-266 alignleft\" style=\"font-weight: 400\">Of 159 samples of drinking water, <strong>83%<\/strong> contained microplastics.
