While this may be true, there are a variety of measures that one can take at home to limit their own contribution to the eutrophication of surrounding waterways:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use a fertilizer that does not contain phosphorus on your lawn.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Instead of throwing away grass clippings or sweeping them onto the street, leave them on your lawn so that they do not get washed down into sewers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Similarly, don\u2019t sweep leaves and other organic matter into the street. Here are a few tips:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shop organic foods. The processes used to farm these foods will utilize fewer chemicals that contribute to nutrient pollution.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keep an eye out for U of M\u2019s Campus Garden and what they are doing around campus.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Campus Garden Volunteer Opportunities: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mbgna.umich.edu\/volunteer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">https:\/\/mbgna.umich.edu\/volunteer\/<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shopping local is a great way to get food that contributes less to nutrient pollution than larger industrial farm operations.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Ann Arbor Farmers\u2019 Market takes place on Saturdays January through April from 8-3.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/a2farmersmarket.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">https:\/\/a2farmersmarket.org\/<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Purchase foods that come from crops that are less water intensive. These crops\u2019 farming practices will have less eutrophication-associated runoff.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Beans, tomatoes and melons are examples of plants that don\u2019t require too much water.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Corn, asparagus, and mangoes are plants that are particularly water intensive.
