The CVGA is located inside the Shapiro Library and has a <a href=\"https:\/\/search.lib.umich.edu\/catalog?filter.collection=Video+Games+-+4th+Floor&amp;filter.location=Shapiro&amp;library=U-M+Ann+Arbor+Libraries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>rich collection of video games<\/strong><\/a>, board games, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.umich.edu\/locations-and-hours\/computer-and-video-game-archive\/use-archive\/game-systems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>wide range of gaming consoles<\/strong><\/a> from the 1970s to the present day. The CVGA archivist and librarian, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.umich.edu\/users\/superman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>David Carter<\/strong><\/a>, welcomed us and introduced the archive. To analyze the game, students first learned about Abbasid art and architecture and the round city of Baghdad in my seminar. Dr. Anderson is the founder of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/digitallabivcc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Digital Lab for Islamic Culture &amp; Collections<\/a><\/strong>, which makes knowledge about Islamic art and history accessible to general audience. As an art historian, she also is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/what-the-new-assassins-creed-game-tells-us-about-ninth-century-baghdad-from-the-art-historian-who-worked-on-the-game-209755\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a consultant on the <em>Mirage<\/em> game<\/a><\/strong>. She and her team worked with <em>Mirage<\/em>\u2019s renowned world-design director Maxime Durand and historian Rapha\u00ebl Weyland. Together, they developed the game\u2019s educational feature, \u201cThe History of Baghdad\u201d codex. Due to its sack by the Mongols in the mid-thirteenth century, there is a substantial lack of archaeological evidence for medieval Baghdad. Textual sources help us to reconstruct an imagined round city. As a historical video game, <em>Mirage <\/em>contributes to the visually immersive ways of teaching students about the monuments of Baghdad as well as the early urban architecture in Iraq. It helps to learn about the built environment and ecology of Baghdad and its surroundings as well as the geographies and landscapes of the eastern Mediterranean. Despite their historically authentic world-building and use in ludic forms of entertainment, such historical video games can construct visually immersive platforms to teach students about art, architecture, historical figure, and now-lost cultural heritage. They do so by developing opportunities for reimagining and representing a past human complex of creative expression, an endeavor that echoes in many ways the tools and methods drawn from the discipline of art history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Fall 2023, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/hartgalleries.lsa.umich.edu\/course_listings_f23\/index.php?num=393-005h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Medievalism in Video Games: Art, Culture and Theory<\/strong><\/a>\u201d course (HISTART 393) is taught by Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/lsa.umich.edu\/histart\/people\/lecturers-and-visitors\/Bihter_Esener.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Bihter Esener<\/strong><\/a> in the Department of the History of Art.
