Student(s) who present each week are expected to submit their in-class handout (1-page) assignment, including key arguments and ideas of readings, as well as 3\u20135 questions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">All other students are expected to have done the readings for the class and to <strong><em>actively<\/em> <\/strong>participate in the discussion (with their opinions about major arguments, topics as well as questions). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Short Essay Assignments:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">There are two short essay paper assignments during the term. Two short essay papers (3-4 pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12pt) are <em><strong>due no later than<\/strong><\/em> noon (12:00 pm) on Fridays at Week 6 and Week 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>First Assignment (<em>due<\/em> Week 6):<\/strong> A question based on one of the readings from the first five weeks of the course will be answered with a short essay (3\u20134 pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12pt).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Second Assignment (<em>due<\/em> Week 11):<\/strong> Video Game Review (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/news.ubisoft.com\/en-gb\/article\/3q7ANVXHm68MIG99qNrPCl\/assassins-creed-mirage-introduces-history-of-baghdad-feature-to-bring-players-closer-to-history\"><strong>Assassin\u2019s Creed: Mirage<\/strong><\/a><\/em>); a short essay (3\u20134 pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12pt) will be written based on the guest lecture, your personal and group examination of the game at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.umich.edu\/locations-and-hours\/computer-and-video-game-archive\"><strong><em>Computer and Video Game Archive (CVGA)<\/em><\/strong><\/a> visit, weekly readings, and in-class discussions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In-Class Group Play &amp; Review Workshop:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Students will work in groups of two or three, play one of the games (<a href=\"https:\/\/hajjtrail.com\/\"><strong>the <em>Hajj Trail<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/digitallabivcc.com\/projects\/games\/digital-munya-2-0\/\"><em><strong>Digital Munya 2.0<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/digitallabivcc.com\/projects\/games\/the-cordoba-journey\/\"><strong>the <em>C\u00f3rdoba Journey<\/em><\/strong><\/a>), and write a 500-word (2 pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12pt) review. They will write about your experience by providing some examples during your play with your group mate: what you think is interesting, what else you can add to the game, how this game enhances a gamer\u2019s historical knowledge and learning about medieval Islamic art, archaeology, and visual culture or etc. Each group will post their experience and review on our <a href=\"https:\/\/courses.lsa.umich.edu\/medievalisminvideogames\/reviews\/\"><strong>course webpage<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Final Research Presentation Proposal and Bibliography:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Students will visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/lsa.umich.edu\/kelsey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>Kelsey Museum of Archaeology<\/em> (KMA)<\/strong><\/a> and the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/umma.umich.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>University of Michigan Museum of Art<\/em> (UMMA)<\/strong><\/a><em><strong> <\/strong><\/em>in their own time in order to prepare their final research presentation. Students will choose 3\u20135 objects, and learn about their histories including their meanings, uses, and geographical context. Please see the <a href=\"https:\/\/courses.lsa.umich.edu\/medievalisminvideogames\/references\/\"><strong>course references page<\/strong><\/a> to become familiar with some collections in both museums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">They will propose how to design a historical video game to teach about these objects and their broad histories to a general audience of gamers. Students are required to make an appointment with the instructor at any time to discuss their ongoing research. Their proposal and bibliography (300 words with 4\u20135 sources; double-spaced, Times New Roman; 12pt) are <em>due<\/em> <strong><em>no later than<\/em><\/strong> noon (12:00 pm) on Friday in Week 8. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Final Research Presentation:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Students are expected to make a final research presentation of 10 to 12 minutes. Their presentation will be about the video game design idea that they have been working on since they submitted their proposal. They will be presenting the objects and their histories that they chose from the <strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/lsa.umich.edu\/kelsey\" target=\"_blank\">Kelsey Museum of Archaeology<\/a><\/em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/lsa.umich.edu\/kelsey\" target=\"_blank\"> (KMA)<\/a><em> <\/em><\/strong>and\/or the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/lsa.umich.edu\/ummaa\"><\/a><strong><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/umma.umich.edu\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/umma.umich.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>University of Michigan Museum of Art<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/strong><\/em><strong><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/umma.umich.edu\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/umma.umich.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\"> (UMMA)<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>. They will be presenting their ideas on how to use these objects in regard to their meanings and uses if they are a consultant to design a historical video game of the Middle Ages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Students are required to prepare PowerPoint slides for their final research presentations.
