What do music and other arts teach us about\u00a0The Smiling Madame Beudet?<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n

Our research\u00a0looks to contextualize the different forms of art that arise in Germaine Dulac\u2019s <\/span>The Smiling Madame Beudet<\/span><\/i>. In our findings, we sought out information regarding different contemporary movements; furthermore, we looked to connect the artists within those movements to\u00a0Dulac, who chose to include them in\u00a0her project.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two of the popular artistic movements in 1920s France – the\u00a0film took place in 1920 – were impressionism and symbolism. Debussy and Baudelaire, two artists who play prominent roles in Dulac\u2019s film, are both prime examples of French artists from these movements. Given their popularity and importance to the French art and culture at the time, it makes sense that they appear in <\/span>The Smiling Madame Beudet<\/span><\/i>. The two works\u00a0Dulac brings in – Baudelaire\u2019s <\/span>La Mort des Amants<\/span><\/i> (The Death of Lovers) and Debussy\u2019s <\/span>Faust<\/span><\/i> – follow\u00a0stories of domestic struggle and death, two prominent themes of the\u00a0film. <\/span>The Smiling Madame Beudet\u00a0<\/span><\/i>is a reflection of<\/span>\u00a0the contemporary French arts.<\/span><\/p>\n
