Abstract
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is known to impact parenting and role development. The Hispanic community has suffered an extensive history of health inequities and is now experiencing severe increases in unemployment due to the pandemic. Given the disproportionate effect on racial and ethnic minority groups, there is little data on the impact of parenting or change to family life in these populations due to the lack of validated measures. In order to understand the consequences within the Hispanic community, the goal of this project is to successfully validate a Spanish translation of the Karitane Parenting Confidence Scale (KPCS). Methods used in the scale validation project included an initial translation by two native Spanish-speakers to translate the KPCS from English to Spanish. Discrepancies and concerns were discussed and through consensus, a Spanish version of the KPCS was finalized. Then, a native-English speaker completed the back-translation from Spanish to English. A committee including the translators and research team evaluated both translated versions and agreed on a final Spanish version to be used for pre-testing with 30 people. Once we’ve completed the pre-testing, we will plan to conduct an online survey with Hispanic parents who have an infant hospitalized in the NICU. We will use the Spanish version of the KPCS and the Impact on Family Scale, already validated in Spanish, to better inform our understanding of how the current pandemic has affected parenting and family life in the Hispanic community.
