Abstract

Music scholarship, as a field in general, lacks the growing interest in diversity and inclusion of adjacent fields; a centuries-long tradition of platforming, elevating, and celebrating only the works of white, male, European composers have cemented into the canon boundaries that are nearly impossible for any figure not matching such an identity to overcome. This is true not only of composers, but performers, artisans, and educators as well. Bringing to light the previously hidden diversity in the history of carillon is what this project’s research is specifically concerned with. This project aims to suggest a change in the exclusive traditions of music scholarship with accessible primary source material edited and compiled by a community of dedicated, diverse scholars (including team researchers Scott Orr and Audrey Dye). Led by this project’s Principal Investigator Dr. Tiffany Ng, “A Century of Women and the Carillon” (to be launched in spring 2022) documents women who played the carillon, wrote for the Carillon, repaired and built Carillons, authored scholarship about the carillon, as well as some who donated to or sponsored carillon building. The StoryMaps website will include photographs, short biographical entries, and additional readings for as many women connected to the history of the carillon as possible; in addition, there is an interactive map that will show the locations and regions of these influential women. The objective of this project is to create not only a source of information for those doing research and education on the history of women of the carillon, but also to provide a blueprint for future scholarship to highlight other marginalized groups in the canon of music history.
