Abstract

The United Community Addiction Network (UCAN) seeks to unite community resources to combat substance use disorder in Flint, Michigan. This project “A Deeper Look into the World of Addiction” aimed to implement a new program to advance the services offered in the hospital. Although addiction has been around for decades, patients in the hospital after overdoses are discharged with little to no resources and often end up in the hospital again. We knew that change was needed towards this vicious cycle so we created a Mobile Crisis Unit (MCU) that consists of peer recovery coaches, health care providers, and trauma-informed therapists. This MCU team can be deployed to work with patients to develop treatment plans and give immediate resources. We reviewed scholarly sources on the effectiveness of these interventions and implemented a similar model in the Ascension hospital in Grand Blanc, MI. We noticed a significant difference in outcomes when we deploy this mobile crisis unit to help educate and create treatment plans with individuals. This research aids in showing that there are ways to help minimize the disease of addiction especially when accessibility to resources are increased.
