Abstract

Researchers at the University of Michigan Transportation Safety Research have studied wheelchair transportation safety for decades. The TravelSafer.org website was established to disseminate research and guidance on the topic to consumers. The initial practical goal of the project was to create a new version of this website that meets 508 standards for accessibility. To develop this website, we utilized the WordPress Guttenberg editor and checked accessibility with several different tools. To further check the accessibility and functionality of the website, we performed usability testing with volunteers, which asks them to perform different tasks using the website. The website was updated to incorporate results from the volunteer study and make it easier to use. The results of the project yielded an accessible, fully functioning website with updated information on wheelchair transportation safety.
