Abstract

The goal and purpose of my research was to help the Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision achieve their goals as a nonprofit organization by conducting research for them in regards to the improvement of the environment of Southwest Detroit through collaboration with residents, community organizations, government agencies, schools, and businesses to combat environmental issues, such as focuses on air quality, illegal dumping, and incompatible land use. contextual knowledge. By conducting randomized phone call studies for community research, launching social media campaigns to raise awareness towards certain topics, and content creation. Change was measured through the impact made by grants and legislation drafted by the nonprofit, as well as certain initiatives started by the nonprofit, such as the Healthy Business and Institutions Initiative, which targets businesses in an effort to address emissions and contribute to pollution mitigation efforts. There are no conclusive results to my specific research area, as my project was more broad and addressed multiple areas and initiatives of the Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision. Some conclusions that can be drawn include the specific conclusions/goals of each project I worked on, along with the overarching observation that in order to make positive changes within a community. The areas examined reveal a larger systemic problem as climate change continues to become more prevalent, and increase the inequities caused by environmental issues. Change needs to be implemented within communities adjusted to their specific needs, such as the work done by the Southwest Detroit Environmental Initiative.
