Abstract

Artspective is an art-based intervention that addresses stigmatizing attitudes toward marginalized populations. The pilot of Artspective examined stigma toward perinatal nurses’ prescribing practices toward pregnant persons who use(d) substance(s). Artspective is now expanding to examine stigma toward persons with HIV/AIDS. In this way, we are testing the feasibility, relevance, and satisfaction of Artspective as a method of addressing stigma within clinicians. We hypothesize that increasing knowledge about and reducing stigma related to HIV/AIDS treatments will improve medical coverage among vulnerable populations. The intervention uses a curated art collection from the University of Michigan Museum of Art to elicit perspective-taking (i.e., taking the point of view of another person within the other’s context). This experience of taking another’s perspective is critical for taking actions and exerting behaviors to alleviate distress resulting from experiencing stigma and improving outcomes, including HIV risk reduction and prevention. We plan to use the findings of Artspective: HIV/AIDs to inform the greater effectiveness of the intervention in reducing stigma, improving knowledge, and increasing preventative treatment exploration among PCP. Additionally, we plan to use the results of the study to develop a larger clinical trial to assess the efficacy in reducing stigmatizing attitudes around HIV/AIDS. Future studies will also test the scalability of the intervention to other populations at high risk for HIV, including transgender, injecting drug use, and adolescent populations.
