Abstract

Previous research has linked experience of material hardship (housing, medical, and food insecurity) to decreased right amygdala-orbitofrontal (OFC) white matter connectivity, which was linked to anxiety and depression in adolescence, suggesting that white matter connectivity between the amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex may have important implications for mental health. However, it unclear whether protective factors such as social support could buffer the association between material hardship and white matter connectivity. Interpersonal and tangible support may provide financial and emotional resources that may counteract the negative impact of material hardship. The present study examined the association between experience of material hardship and adolescent social support in a population-based sample of 194 adolescents (age 15) recruited from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study. Results found that material hardship was negatively correlated with amygdala-OFC white matter connectivity and social support; however, there was no significant interaction effect between social support and material hardship in relation to white matter connectivity. This suggests that while material hardship was decreased with increased social support, other related factors may better moderate its link with adolescent white matter connectivity.
