Abstract

Gold nanorods synthesized with surfactants are toxic in living cells. Therefore, we modified the gold nanorods to make them biocompatible. Biocompatible nanorods can allow more specific methods of drug and gene delivery. We performed ligand exchange process and determined the quality of the ligand exchange by spectrophotometry. We show the nanorods have not been contaminated throughout the ligand exchange procedure. The biocompatible nanorods produced from these ligand exchange can be used as a new type of targeted gene and drug therapy. Thus, these nanorods can be a way to treat region-specific and genetic diseases, resulting in less harmful, more effective treatments.
