Abstract

Introduction: Caring for a person diagnosed with dementia is a task that is both physically and mentally draining. While Caregiving research is well documented, research in order to understand a caregivers approach to care and how they enact care is often neglected.. With the introduction of the dangerous Covid-19 virus, and subsequent change in access to certain resources, the life of a caregiver has become even more difficult, forcing them to alter previously effective techniques. Method: This study gathers the perspective of 100 caregivers’ difficulties and successes during the Covid-19 pandemic, through qualitative interviews. Using a qualitative analysis strategy called RADaR, a technique that groups data into a formatted, concise way, certain patterns became prevalent. Results: Due to Covid, many services were inhibited, making the task of being a caregiver much more difficult. While many negatives seemed to emerge during this time period, caregivers also noted that the movement to online services made some things much more manageable. Discussion: Focusing on how access to healthcare and community services hindered or improved caregiving during this time period, we will create a final codebook displaying our analysis of the topic. Reading these interviews contributes to our understanding of the harsh realities of Covid. With the virus having an impact over such a long period of time, these conditions may become a reality for the future. We need to be able to adapt to these conditions and determine effective caregiving techniques for not just dementia but a broad array of chronic illnesses and older adults.
