Abstract

The postpartum period poses many challenges and risks to mothers across America such as a rise in maternal mental health conditions (MMH). MMH conditions are one of the most common challenges associated with childbirth in the U.S. These ever-present challenges coupled with being a structurally disadvantaged individual significantly heighten the severity of the postpartum period. Largely due to this inequity, structurally disadvantaged individuals are less likely to receive access to quality care and resources and may be more severely impacted by MMH conditions. Suicides typically take place in about the first 43 – 365 days of the postpartum year. As such, visiting a clinician during the postpartum year to check up on the individual’s needs is crucial. However, less than 50% of new mothers who die by suicide attend a postpartum visit, and individuals who are structurally disadvantaged are even less likely to visit a clinician in their postpartum year. In order to learn more about community-based interventions in place to alleviate these issues among postpartum individuals, we are conducting a scoping review, guided by the Arksey and O’Malley framework. We are compiling articles across a number of databases and analyzing the information present in them to identify the scope and breadth of the information present on the community-based interventions for individuals with MMH conditions. The findings of this scoping review will give us more insight into the community-based interventions that are implemented for our population of interest, health outcomes that potentially result from these interventions, and potential gaps in research regarding community-based interventions for individuals with behavioral health disorders during the postpartum period.
