Abstract
It is no doubt COVID-19 has globally impacted many people since 2020. However, minorities, especially Black Americans, have disproportionately been impacted by COVID-19. From access to personal protection equipment, vaccines, testing sites, and mental health services, America struggled to provide the adequate services necessary for the health and wellbeing of the minorities. This study serves as a look into the failures and success of our nation at acknowledging the needs of minorities both physically and mentally. Using research gathered by The University of Michigan’s School of Social Work-surveys of 1393 Black participants, this study allows readers to develop a sense of how Black Americans felt during the pandemic. By using a numeric scale (where 1-5 represented various answers- i.e yes, no, etc.) participants were able to answer questions that closely represented their circumstances, and such responses were able to be quantified using the online statistical database IBM. The questions asked required intrapersonal reflection about how Black Americans felt, as well as what resources they were given at the start of the pandemic, in conjunction with various literature about Black Americans in the early pandemic. Results revealed many Black Americans reported feeling a new sense of stress, an abundance of misformation, and increased social media usage. This study is just the surface of the depth COVID-19 has had on Black Americans. By using data gathered directly from Black Americans about their mental wellbeing, hopefully, there will be more conversation about mental health by the nation and within the community as well.
