Abstract

The study of critical race theory and its role in police reform study aims to better understand police training and tactics in America, centering historical knowledge of police brutality and racism. The study includes a thorough literature review. The literature review explores the historical context and timeframe of police brutality and corruption in the American police force. The literature review also explores current police training materials and tactic strategy teaching materials. Based on the findings within the literature review, the study will perform qualitative interviews with police officers to gain an understanding of their current historical knowledge of the historical complicity of US law enforcement in racism and racial violence. Once the interviews are concluded, an analysis of the responses from the police officer’s interviews will be combined and used to put forward suggestions for systemic changes to police training.
