Abstract
Certain cultures in this day and time have maintained their way of life in supporting themselves and the environment, while other parts of the world forgot about sustainability. The idea of learning from their traditions and implementing technology with these traditions opens up the possibilities of setting examples in sustainability especially in urban settings. At the start of this research, we found a community surrounding the MBAD Bead Museum in Detroit that would be the focal point for this project and designed ideas that would benefit the museum the best. Our answer to this is a fully sustainable green house designed in traditional African art for its architecture but with sensors and electronics implemented to help users maintain the greenhouse (mixed). The idea of implementing African art and design in the greenhouse allows us to decolonize or remove the norm for . This green house should make it easier for owner to grow his own wood to use for his beads and sculptures for his art but also put an example to follow for sustainability in urban settings. Surrounding the greenhouse’s progress, a Gantt chart was made to keep track of the systems of the greenhouse and to measure progress on the project. I have focused on assisting the construction of the greenhouse at the field site and researching and designing a water harvesting solution for the greenhouse. At the end of this year, the greenhouse’s main structure has been built and fine-tuned to withstand the weather conditions while the basis of the water harvesting solution is set for others to continue the work. – [UNDER PROGRESS]
