Abstract
The Michigan Quarterly Review’s Special Issue titled “Decades of Fire” is focused on gearing the wide array of literature found in Middle Eastern countries as a consequence of the period shortly preceding and following the First Gulf War. It gathers from a multitude of different sources and genres, with people of varying ages, identities, and nationalities coming together to contribute to this issue. It includes works of fiction, nonfiction, short stories, and poetry. It also crosses the confines of the MENA region to attempt to incorporate works from other spheres of the contiguous Muslim-majority world, including Afghanistan. It is an analytic work so far as it also forms a timeline to introduce the major historical underpinnings and literary revolutions during this period. With particular focus on the Levant and North Africa, Arab voices are given a chance to be uplifted as well as those of other groups experiencing marginalization in the discourse surrounding the crises in the Middle East.
