Abstract
Decreased anti-inflammatory cytokine levels cause inflammation. During pregnancy, inflammation is linked to increased risk of pregnancy complications and long term immune dysregulation and susceptibility to metabolic disease for the infant. Pregnant African American women are more likely to have chronic conditions, such as greater systemic inflammation and/or depressive symptoms, compared to non-hispanic white women. We hypothesize that women with high risk social factors or demographics, such as older age, depressive symptoms, and perceived discrimination, are at higher risk for inflammation during pregnancy. The data used in this project were collected as part of the NIH Biosocial Impact on Black birth cohort where questionnaires were filled out by a cohort of pregnant African American women (n=187) recruited at clinics in the midwest and plasma levels of cytokines interleukin 10 (IL-10) an anti-inflammatory cytokine, were measured. Data from the questionnaire and log X+1 transformed IL-10 data were analyzed using SPSS software. Comparison of IL 10 levels with depressive symptoms, and experiences of discrimination were performed. Depressive symptoms divided into three categories and anova run with Tukey Post hoc test revealed no significant correlation with IL-10 . Based on preliminary correlation analysis, CES-D as a whole showed a trend for negative correlation with IL-10 (p < 0.1) while perception of Discrimination was negatively correlated with IL-10 (p < 0.05). The relationships between the anti-inflammatory marker IL-0, along with other inflammation markers, with depressive symptoms and perceived discrimination will be further investigated.
