Abstract
This overall project is concerned with design of a drone with a payload consisting of a radiation senbsior. The specific aim of the project is to help detect harmful radioactive contamination in areas that cannot be reached by human through means of ground vehicles or are more efficiently surveyed using aircraft. A fully functioning hexacopter is being designed for this purpose. It is being assembled from readily available hobbyist components and will use open-source software such as the autopilot PixHawk 4. The drone is named the Intelligent Radiation Awareness Drone (iRAD) because of the radiation mapping and measurement-based navigational flight plan software that is being developed for it. iRAD will have a payload of 1 kg with a flight time of 15 to 30 minutes. The main aim of this subproject is to model objects using SolidWorks that will hold the delicate parts of the drone. These include the depth sensor, LiPo battery, and radiation detector. The parts are being manufactured using 3D-printing following engineering design-build-test iterations. Weatherproofing the drone overall is also included in the scope of this work.
