Abstract

Performance-based earthquake engineering is a broad area of structural and seismic engineering from which performance-based wind engineering originated. The difference between seismic engineering and wind engineering is that in the field of wind engineering, the long duration of wind storms makes the computational methods different and difficult. As compared to seismic events, the repetition of simulation in the case of modern performance-based wind engineering frameworks requires the use of specific direct integration methods. The goal of this research is to investigate the target reliability of an archetype building which will serve as the performance target for future structures. Facilitating the construction of more efficient buildings that meet public safety and performance requirements while adhering to desired building functionality requirements will reduce property damage from wind. Performance-based engineering means that the decision-making process is directly linked to building performance. This study tests and simulates the response of a archetype building located in Miami, FL, in the software environments of OpenSees, OpenSeesNavigator, and WiRA. The results of this study will improve the overall performance of future buildings through providing understanding on the response of existing buildings within the setting of state-of-the-art modeling procedures.
