Abstract

Stormwater networks can utilize sensors and controllers to diagnose and resolve real-time flooding and water quality problems like how autonomous vehicles spot and avoid obstacles while driving. This process is called real-time control, which enables the stormwater network to adapt and respond to different situational factors, like changing weather and pollutants. To date, most real-time controlled stormwater networks focus on managing water quantity parameters like flow, depth, and velocity, instead of water quality parameters like sediments, nutrients, or dissolved oxygen. To address this knowledge gap, a new water quality sensing and control system was developed to detect and respond to dissolved oxygen, one of the most critical indicators of water quality. The dissolved oxygen sensors are low-cost, open-source (i.e, collaborative software), and internet-connected, providing data in real-time that can be used by the control system. The control system includes an internet-connected actuator that changes the position of the valve (i.e., how open or closed the valve is) and a set of instructions (i.e., control algorithm) to manage and adapt the stormwater network. The control algorithm computes the optimal valve setting to maximize dissolved oxygen levels and then the actuator sets the valve position to the computed optimal setting. The new water quality sensing and control system will be tested in a portion of Ann Arbor’s stormwater network in spring 2022.
