Abstract
Abstract Prior research indicates that there is a correlation between sleep quality and marital satisfaction. My research project expands upon this literature to examine the connections between sleep trouble and disruption and overall marital satisfaction as well as positive qualities perceived in partners. Finally, I sought to examine if whether the presence of hypertension had any affect on these connections. I obtained data from a sample of 30 couples who are either married or cohabitating, in which at least one member of the couple had high blood pressure. The participants responded to survey questions about their sleep habits and marital quality for 5 days. My results indicated that partner disturbed sleep and general troubled sleep have a negative correlation with marital satisfaction and perceived positive qualities in the partner. There were also findings that people without hypertension report more marital satisfaction and perceive more positive qualities in their partners. My hope is that this research will help couples understand how habits like sleep affect their interactions with each other and be more mindful about why they might have those negative interactions.
