Abstract

Diabetes has been a growing problem since 1994 when the CDC declared that diabetes has reached epidemic levels. However, all efforts to control diabetes levels failed as in the last 20 years diabetes has tripled. Our research focuses on the biology of the endocrine pancreas, which produces the hormone to regulate metabolism. For our research, we use genetically engineered mouse models, cell culture systems, human islets as well as stem cell-derived human beta cells to interrogate cellular signaling pathways that become defective early during diabetes development. We use PCR-genotyping and analyze the findings, then transfer them to software that the PI has created in order to collect the data. This software is updated every week as we take a look at several interesting genes from the mice colony. As we continue analyzing our data we must take into consideration that there is a certain extent of new knowledge needed as there is no known cure for diabetes, but there have been many years of research to lower symptoms and severity. There are no results yet, as more research needs to be done for we are just analyzing the genes and looking for any problematic ones. This process will take many years, even so, we are hoping to discover how certain signaling pathways modify cell behavior and how they are affected in human disease. From there we would be able to determine and develop new treatment strategies.
