Abstract

Data concerning election results is widely available from countries all over the world and across hundreds of years; however, this information can only be found from individual sources, each of which utilize different formats to present the data. Thus, the data is often difficult to use for comparative research purposes. The Constituency-Level Elections Archive (CLEA) addresses this issue by providing free, easy-to-access reliable election results spanning hundreds of years, all in one comprehensive source. CLEA uses official government results as well as other reliable sources to code the data in one format that provides information that is crucial for research purposes. Within our project, research assistants are assigned elections to code, and they are required to transfer the information of each election from the original source to a coded spreadsheet in excel. The dataset documents several variables, which includes the names of constituencies, candidates, and parties, as well as the number of registered voters, total votes per candidate and party, voter turnout, and allocation of seats. By coding elections around the world and adding political parties, patterns can be tracked in voting including shifts in ideas, attitudes, and power. Currently, CLEA has documented about 1,900 elections from 170 countries and territories in its Lower Chamber Elections Archive. These datasets have been cited in 131 publications, working papers, and presentations, each of which address a research question that requires an analysis of election data. By consistently releasing new datasets that are readily available to the general public at no cost, CLEA continues to be an invaluable source that is used for research, education, and policy-making.
