Abstract
Asian American breast cancer patients face significant disparities in breast cancer morbidities, mortalities, and care outcomes compared to non-Hispanic White counterparts. Little is known about the impact that provider-patient relationships have on a patient’s experience and quality of care. The goals of this study are to understand how Asian American breast cancer survivors view the diversity engagement of healthcare providers and how these characteristics of healthcare providers affect patients’ care. We conducted approximately 36 qualitative interviews with diverse Asian American breast cancer survivors (Chinese-, Japanese- and Vietnamese-Americans). The team performed thematic analysis of the interview transcripts to understand how provider-patient relationships impacted patients’ care experiences and to identify healthcare needs of Asian American breast cancer patients. Currently, the major themes we identified include lacking communication and inadequate interpersonal skills of healthcare providers. These qualitative approaches provided us with greater understanding of the nuanced experiences of care and cultural complexities among the three ethnic groups. These findings enabled us to synthesize the necessary skills healthcare providers need to learn to provide effective care for these patients. The identification of essential skills of healthcare providers serve as a continuation of vital knowledge that the providers should know in order to improve the healthcare experiences of Asian American breast cancer patients. Future research should examine effective ways to educate healthcare providers on the importance of communication and interpersonal skills with patients and identify other relevant capacities for healthcare providers to build upon.
