Abstract
Despite the alarming number of adolescents that struggle with mental and behavioral health issues, there are currently barriers preventing those in need from receiving care due to the lack of availability of child psychiatrists. Primary care providers are treating patients every day that are struggling with their mental health and could benefit greatly from increased access to the support and medical care they need. This chart review study examines how PCPs are addressing mental health concerns including screening, treatment recommendations, and psychopharmacological interventions. Many aspects of patient charts are reviewed such as depression screening and treatment. This research project focuses on primary care providers offering referrals versus psychotropic medication based on the patients’ age. Age sparks many follow-up questions such as the importance of early intervention in addressing mental health and implications regarding mental health diagnosis of children. This research could ultimately help us better understand patient care as well as improve depression screening and primary care outcomes. Particularly, analyzing age differences in treatment plans will ultimately help primary care providers in addressing mental health issues in their patients and forming consistent plans-of-action going forward.
