Abstract
At the convergence of organizational psychology and business, leadership emerges as a vital factor in an organization’s success. Although much has been done to explore different leadership methods, there is little research on specific characteristics, behavioral patterns, and experiences that may contribute to an effective leader. This study explores the topic of leadership further in asking the following: How do people lead, follow, and collaborate with one another in a work setting? My team collects data in a three-pronged manner. The first prong of data collection is geared towards collecting qualitative information through literature reviews of relevant academic works discussing relevant topics such as “information processing†and “communication.†The second prong is a series of Zoom study sessions in which a group of freelance workers either work independently or collaboratively while being observed by a moderator taking note of any significant behavior (qualitative data). My team also conducts interviews with CEOs and other business leaders, asking them specific questions about leadership styles, conflict resolution, and the root of their success in business and leadership. While this study has indicated characteristics and leadership styles that may contribute to an effective workplace, we cannot make definite conclusions at this point in the research process as more data needs to be collected to do so. Through gathering qualitative data from numerous sources, we find evidence that certain traits, experiences, or patterns may contribute to workplace success and effective leadership. The social benefit of this research primarily pertains to the workplace and a smoother, more efficient environment for organizations. The goal is to pinpoint certain traits and behaviors that contribute to good leadership and promote efficient collaboration in the workplace.
