Abstract

Leadership and hierarchy in the workplace are some of the most relevant and enticing topics in business psychology. If successful (and not so successful) leaders can be understood, then successful leadership strategies can be implemented in various aspects of life and improve the wellbeing of so many, especially in the workplace. With my research team, we have sought to find answers to: What makes a good leader? What does a healthy workplace look like? Are employees generally happy in today’s workplace? In the midst of an unprecedented, devastating pandemic like COVID-19, these questions are pertinent now more than ever. In order for us to find our results, we have practiced strategies such as interviews, moderating gig-work sessions, literature searches, and analyzing our results through taking notes. Some key trends we have found include the fact that many independent gig workers are generally happier and more fulfilled with working from home; a shift that many individuals may wish to make during or after this pandemic. We have also found that the pandemic has increased feelings of loneliness and isolation among workers, which has been a challenge for many managers to work through with their employees. These findings help us understand what the future of the workplace could look like, and how the pandemic is affecting employees, managers, and leaders around the nation.
