Abstract
To this day, there is little information about cooperatives, as they do not dominate capitalist markets. As an introduction, they are business entities that have goals beyond profit, as they aim at helping producers through providing a variety of services, including education, resources, legal influence, and more. This research is being performed because it is essential to understand how cooperatives function in changing markets and conditions. Through successes and challenges, cooperatives have persevered in a way that has allowed them to just keep improving and growing larger. This information is important so that other cooperatives can learn from them to improve their own situations in their own countries. As the development of cooperatives is usually rough, future ones would benefit from this study. The cooperatives in this study are centered on those in third-world countries, as they help with improving the welfare of inhabitants. This project is guided by a previous interest in coffee cooperatives in Costa Rica.
