Abstract

Both law school and the legal profession more generally can often feel like feedback deserts, where individuals are unfortunately not given much feedback on their work. This absence of developmental guidance makes it particularly difficult for people from under-resourced backgrounds to succeed. To address this issue, I have worked with Professor Patrick Barry on “Feedback Loops,” a project designed to give students the conceptual vocabulary and low-stakes practice opportunities necessary to improve the way they give, receive, and interpret feedback. As a research assistant, I practice giving my own feedback by creating weekly “E-D-I-T” memos that help Professor Barry improve both his in-class teaching and the materials he uses in two sets of online courses he has developed for the educational platform Coursera. I also examine the feedback I receive from the many law students on his research team. This multi-directional feedback system makes me well-positioned to support what is the next big goal of the project: expand the small, once-a-year “Feedback Loops” course Professor Barry currently teaches into a large, perpetually available online series. This research is an ongoing process, but everyone involved in this project–either on the research side or the learning side–is creating better ways to advocate and give feedback.
